2010 yılı savunma harcamalarının dünyadaki askeri bütçelerin toplamının yüzde 47'si olduğu tahmin edilirken, ABD'nin ulusal bütçesinin de yüzde 19'unu oluşturuyordu.
ABD askeri bütçesi 1998 yılından bu yana iki katına çıkarken, askeri personel sayısı 2,25 milyon kişi olarak tahmin ediliyor. ABD'nin posta teşkilatı ise 599 bin kişiyi istihdam ediyor.
